The Blue Lake at Oronogo
Joplin/Web City Missouri Review
The Blue Lake at Oronogo is located just north of Joplin Missouri and Web City. This quarry’s surface temperature peaks in the 80’s during the summer. The 1st thermalcline is 70 degrees around 40 feet deep and a chilly 50 degrees at 2nd thermal cline. Despite a little chill, the quarry is a great place to dive with average visibility is 20 to 40 feet and is generally best in spring. Under the water you will find nice walls, large caves, sunken cars, a plane, several platforms, boats, a home computer with monitor on a desk like setting, and much more. The Fish in the quarry are quite shy of divers, but occasionally you will run across some. Captain Johns Sports and Scuba is located at the dive site providing air fills, training, snacks, drinks, gear rental, sales and repair with a very friendly staff. Primitive camping is available at the quarry with flush bathrooms and cold showers on the side of the shop dive.
A dive buddy is required at this quarry, but if you do not have one, there is usually someone to dive with. Also, Captain John's can usually provide at Lake Tour for a minimal charge if you are alone, but I recommend calling in advance.
The Blue Lake is just a few minutes away from Joplin. If you only travel on Range Line Road in Joplin which is the road that heads south from the quarry, you will find a verity of restaurants from fast food to home style to nice dinning, a mall, Wal-Mart stores, grocery stores, an abundance of hotels, and much more. Staying on Range Line Road will help you to keep your bearings going to and from the quarry and besides, for the most part you will not even need to venture off this path.
If you’re in the area, be sure to bring you wetsuit and take a dive you will not soon forget.
Dive Safe and Have Fun!
